March 8th women’s Day Special + Promo

This post is not sponsored and neither I received any products in exchange for this post/interview. I truly enjoyed and loved their products I ordered in 2020. So, I reached out to the company if they would be offering promo code to my lovely readers which they graciously provided.

One of the most important days of the year to celebrate Women’s achievements!

We Indians love a very good Chai/Tea and no evening rolls off without a cup of tea. In my quest to try new blends, I stumbled upon ‘the chai bar’ and ordered teas from them. Little did I know at that time I will become super fan of their Rose blend and Masala Chai.

I was super impressed with the Chai, quality and authenticity of the teas. So, I immediately reached out to Madura, who is the owner of the Chai bar to see if she can give an interview for Women’s day.

Meet the uber talented, very confident Madura, Owner of ‘The Chai Bar’ ! A completely woman-owned Specialty Tea Company spreading the Love for Chai!! Her love for bringing the handcrafted tea blend to the USA makes her blends unique, innovative and distinct yet Traditional!

Traditional Chai taste should not be difficult to achieve with her blends.

Here is Madura and her Chai Bar for all of you!

1. What is your background? What motivated you to start the Chai Bar?

I have a Bachelors in Mathematics, Masters in International Business, and Financial Engineering. I’m a self-declared ‘chai connoisseur’, fueled by a passion to bring to America the true experience of Chai & eager to incorporate into my brand the traditional flavors of chai from India. My hunger (or in this case thirst) for knowledge and determination to turn information into action has contributed to the most recent launch of our Chai Blends. I am constantly working on improving the blends we offer by implementing strategic project management methods and ensuring a work-life balance for myself and my team.

2. When did you start the Chai Bar? When did it really kickstart?

I started The Chai Bar in late 2017 with a goal of educating and creating awareness about chai and spices in the USA. We’d do farmers’ markets, festivals, events and private parties and bring our different types of brewed chai. Over the couple of years, we mastered the blends and launched our amazing blends in the middle of the pandemic 2020. We kickstarted in the pandemic.

3. How are your blends unique? Which blends are most popular and why?

We put immense effort into finding the perfect suppliers. We emphasize valuing tea workers and smallholder farmers’ human rights, working to improve their health and financial security while protecting and nurturing the land they work on.

I have drawn inspiration from different stages of my life, mainly from my upbringing in India for the blends. With these blends I’m bringing my memories, culture and traditions in a cup. Our most popular blends are Gulabi – Kashmiri Pink Chai, Sanyukta Bharatam – Classic Masala, Astrakadir – Rose Cardamom, Mangalyam – Lavender Marigold and Malhar – Turmeric Tonic.

4. Where do you source them from? We love good, Organic products with ethical sourcing.

Our Black tea is sourced from a family owned tea estate in Assam and Green tea is sourced from the Foothills of Himalayas. This tea garden is special because it does so much more than ensuring fair wages, the owners provide educational scholarships for tea workers children, they also provide eco-homes to vulnerable families.

5. As a women Entrepreneur, what are your initial struggles to start the Business? But more importantly how did you overcome them?

I think there are structural inequalities that are a barrier for women entrepreneurs. The food industry is dominated by men yet more talented women cook at home. My personal challenges as an entrepreneur were not necessarily gender specific but more of finding the right path and resources in the food industry as I never worked in food professionally prior to switching my careers. Also, the challenge is real to spread the taste of authentic chai, culture and tradition around it. I think being persistent and believing in myself helped me.

6. We know Covid made it difficult for everyone, especially the small business owners. But, I see you are coming out strong in the past few months. What keeps you going everyday?

Customers like you who truly admire and love our chai keeps us going. There is nothing like seeing happy faces of people and emails on how they love our chai.

7. Do you have any words of wisdom/encouragement for other Small Business Owners?

Do NOT quit even when you think it is hard. Keep going and keep moving.
