No, I don’t like Beetroot one bit.
Yes, that’s the truth and then everything changed once I became pregnant. Its one of those weird things which happened. Women crave sweets, fast foods, savory, salt and many more. But for some weird reasons I started enjoying coffee and beetroot more during my pregnancy. More weird (to me) my kid loves, actually adores beetroot chips than lays chips.
Eating the beetroots still stuck with me even after and I enjoy this healthy and yummy vegetable in both stir fries and curries alike. Most of the times you get that nasty after taste of Iron after eating beetroot. But that never bothered me.
Adding beetroot to sweets is new for me. But it is the easiest and delicious dessert you can make to grace any occasion. Plus there is a big added benefit of HEALTHY in the mix. As you know, Beetroot is good for
- Boosting Immunity
- Detoxifying your body
- Cleansing the blood
- Reduces for blood pressure
- Rich in Iron, Calcium, Vit A & C
- Prevents cancer, dementia, birth defects and the list goes on.
I recently made the beetroot halwa following similar method to Carrot Halwa. For my new friends – Halwa is a famous sweet dish made in India and other parts of world usually with flour, butter and sugar. There are so many different methods to do halwa and you can pick any variety of ingredients to go into it.
I wanted to make the Healthy beetroot halwa in easiest way. You simply add grated beetroot, sugar, milk and ghee. Cook it well as per instructions and then serve it with your favorite nuts, dry grapes and cardamom powder. That’s it.
I opted to pressure cook it, as it reduces the cooking time by half. Make sure you take fresh Organic beets which gives that beautiful Magenta color and juicy in nature.

Let’s jump into the recipe.
Healthy Beetroot Halwa
Easy and Healthy sweet Halwa made with Iron-rich Beets.
- 2 Organic Beetroots
- 1 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp Ghee
- 4 cashews (broken in pieces)
- 8 Raisins/dry grapes
- 1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
- Wash, peel and grate beetroots and keep them ready.
- In a medium saucepan, add 1 tbsp of ghee. Once hot, add broken cashews, almonds – fry them. Add raisins and once they turn slightly golden – take them all into small cup.
- To the same sauce pan, add remaining 2 tbsp of ghee. Once hot, add the grated beetroot and fry them well. Make sure the beets are cooked well and not raw. Add sugar, milk and keep stirring till the mixture thickens. Alternatively you can cook this mixture in pressure cooker for 2 whistles or Instant pot with high pressure for 5 mins.
- Add the cardamom powder, ghee roasted nuts and raisins. Mix it well.
- Serve either hot or cold. It tastes yummy either way. Enjoy!!!!
- Add full fat or 2% fat milk for rich flavor.
- Nuts can include pistas, cashews, slivered almonds or skip them altogether.
- Sugar can be replaced with condensed milk. But reduce the milk to 1/2 cup instead of 1.
